ON A MISSION: 9-man Universiti Malaysia Sabah students to perform feat at mall

KOTA KINABALU: NINE Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students will take turns running two hours on a treadmill continuously for 11 days to break the Malaysia Book of Records come Jan 20.
The "Longest Run on A Treadmill by Group" record is currently held by University Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Kota Samarahan since 2012 after its team of nine members ran five days.
UMS Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah said the attempt was held in conjunction with the university's 20th anniversary.
"This activity will definitely boost the confidence level among students besides inking the name of UMS in Malaysia's record," he said during the sponsorship presentation here yesterday.
The aid from the state Youth and Sports Ministry, hotel and retailers will be spent on food, accommodation and transportation, among others.
Besides the nine participants, there are also 38 other undergraduates who will assist in the record-breaking session at a shopping mall here.
One of the athletes, Abner Moilie, said the team was optimistic succeeding in the quest as they had started intensive training since December.
"Each of us are either running for 90 minutes on treadmill or jogging around the campus on almost every evening," said the 21-year-old Sports Science student.
Abner, who has vision impairment, described his participation in that challenge would be another significant event of his life.
"Unlike others, I have slight difficulty in balancing myself while running, but it won't stop me from being a sportsman," he said, adding that he had won a bronze medal in Asian Youth Para Games 2009 in Japan.
Also present were State Youth and Sports Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary Penyuki Matta and UMS deputy vice-chancellor Datuk Kasim Md Mansur.
