KOTA KINABALU: Pitas, which has been listed as one of the poorest districts in the country, will be transformed within two years, said Pitas assemblyman Datuk Seri Ruddy Awah.

Despite the challenges of Covid-19, he said that over the past three years, there have been significant changes taking place in Pitas, located about 170km from here.

"Previously, we had only a few shop units, now we have 54 units set to be completed this year. I also brought in a bank, a fire station, and completed public housing projects.

"When I was in the ministry, I secured 18 communication towers, all of which are now operational, greatly benefiting the people. In just two more years, I am confident that Pitas will be transformed 100 per cent.

"It is possible for people here to move from hardcore poor to poor category, but it is not easy to come out of the poor category due to a lack of infrastructure compared to other places," the state assistant Rural Development Minister told reporters after launching the Pitas 2024-2035 Development Plan at a hotel here last night.

When asked about poverty reduction among the constituents, Ruddy said that most people in Pitas rely on fishing and farming.

"Their income is unlikely to reach RM2,000 per month, which is the threshold to move from hardcore poverty to poverty. Many only earn enough to survive daily.

"That's why we help them with various initiatives - farmers receive temporary aid while waiting for their crops to be harvested, and fishermen get RM300 monthly assistance from the Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM).

"As their elected representative, I ensure they do not struggle unnecessarily. I cover school fees, hospital transport, and even provide three free vehicles for those in need. Families facing hardship receive RM300 in aid," he said.

Describing the district as having its own uniqueness, Ruddy said the 10-year development plan focuses on structured development in areas such as agriculture, tourism, and infrastructure.

Among the initiatives is providing better market access for their produce and catch, and the opening of agro-related banking facilities in June. Pitas authorities have also worked with the Sabah Tourism, Culture, and Environment Ministry to promote unique tourist attractions, including Marudu Bay, Batu Supirak, and the 10-day Chinese New Year Festival.

As for infrastructure, Ruddy said the federal government has approved a RM66 million road project in Kampung Telaga, benefiting over 6,000 residents, while another major road, Jalan Salimpodon-Mantus, has been allocated RM22 million for development.

Both projects are expected to be completed next year.

"We have submitted proposals to relevant authorities to ensure a stable electricity supply."
