KOTA KINABALU: Five students experienced emotional stress after being mocked to have relations to the death of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, the coroner's court was told.
In a joint statement by lawyers representing Zara's family members, counsellor Miswati binti Lundu—who was recalled again today to present two reports she prepared—said that counselling sessions involving the five students were held on July 17, 2025, both in the morning and at night.
She said the morning session was held for the students to express their feelings and to provide emotional support to the students, while the night session was a follow-up to the reports made by the five students.”
According to the counsellor’s report cited in the joint statement, the five students told her they were under emotional pressure because other pupils had mocked them.
Miswati stated that the group complained that other students mocked them for being the cause of what happened to Zara, adding that such mockery could be categorised as verbal bullying.
She also told the inquest that senior students shared feelings of responsibility, saying they felt as though they were the reason why Zara was found under the dormitory block.
However, she stressed that “this was not an official admission.”
One student showed strong emotional reactions during counselling, and Miswati said she observed that all the students were sad, crying and expressing their feelings.
She also expressed her view that she did not agree with the actions taken by the students on the night before Zara was found on the lower level of the dormitory.
The inquest proceedings will resume on Nov 21, 2025.
