KOTA KINABALU: Local authorities should continuously monitor the management and operations of educational institutions such as madrasahs to prevent such incidents from recurring, said Pintasan assemblyman Datuk Fairuz Renddan.
“There must be a special mechanism to monitor the management of these schools. Parents send their children to madrasahs with one clear intention—to build strong moral character through religious education.
“Parents place their trust in educators to care for and guide their children. Incidents like this will undoubtedly cause deep concern among parents if no firm and consistent action is taken in the near future.
“They have the right to learn in a peaceful environment, to be protected in safe conditions, and to have their welfare safeguarded—especially in the very places where they are being educated,” he said in a statement.
The former assistant Youth and Sports minister strongly condemned the actions of a man believed to be a madrasah teacher who was caught on video assaulting a group of male students with a motorcycle helmet at a shop area.
Fairuz described the incident, which was recorded in a nearly five-minute viral video circulating on social media, as completely unacceptable—especially as it involved students undergoing religious education.
“If there was an issue, a mistake, or if the students needed to be disciplined for breaching school rules, it should never be done by smashing their heads with a helmet.
“This act is baseless, unethical and inhumane,” said Fairuz in a statement, who is now the Assistant Local Government and Housing minister.
The man, who was in his 30s, arrested by police last night to facilitate investigations.

He said firm action must be taken against the adult involved to ensure similar incidents do not recur.
“It is hoped that this incident will serve as a lesson and that such behaviour can be prevented from happening again in the future."
