KOTA KINABALU: The father of Zara Qairina Mahathir tried to wake his daughter when a doctor decided to remove her oxygen support, the Coroner's Court heard today.

School discipline teacher Nur Shukriah Mohd Fauzi testified about what happened in the hospital ward where Zara had been admitted after she was found unconscious at the SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha dormitory.

The 37-year-old said Mahathir Mohd Hashim was present when a doctor sought permission to extubate the 10-year-old.

She told the court that Zara's mother was not at the ward on the afternoon of July 17.

"Her aunt was there and asked the doctor to wait because the mother was not present.

"Her father was emotional and standing in the corner. When the doctor mentioned the oxygen, the father went to the bed and said, 'Zara, wake up'," she said.

Earlier, lawyer Clarice Vyonne Conrad, representing Zara's father, questioned Shukriah on why she did not inform Zara's mother about the findings of the school's internal inquiry while she was at the hospital.

Clarice: You were at the hospital on July 17 in the afternoon, and on the same day, you had already conducted the investigation between 9 and 10am. So, you knew what happened to Zara?

Shukriah: I only knew that Zara had met with the students that night.

Clarice: You knew what happened to Zara based on the internal probe when you were at the hospital. Why didn't you tell her mother and family?

Shukriah: I didn't dare to because the investigation was not completed yet, and I was worried it would worsen their emotions.

The inquest continues.
