GRS will likely to give way to BN to contest in Lamag and Kinabatangan by-elections

KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) will likely give way to Barisan Nasional to defend Lamag and Kinabatangan by-election, said its chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

“We will discuss this within GRS. Most likely, we will not contest the seat; instead, we will show respect to the party that won previously, as they are part of the state government,” he said when met at the state Legislative Assembly Building here.

Hajiji said GRS is prepared to give a clear run to the party concerned and assist them in securing victory in the by-election, in line with the coalition’s principle of cooperation among ruling partners.

“We will give them a clear run and help them win the by-election,” he said, adding that discussions would also be held with the leadership of UMNO and Barisan Nasional to align positions and ensure consensus.

Lamag seat and Kinabatangan parliament seat fell vacant after former Sabah BN chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin passed away.

Bung, 66, died due to to lungs and kidneys complications on Dec 5 which was only few days after he retained Lamag seat for the second term.

Polling day for the Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections has been set for Jan 24, the Election Commission (EC) announced.

EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the nomination day and early voting would be held on Jan 10 and 20, respectively.
