KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's growth domestic product is expected to grow about two per cent next year, driven by development in the services sector.

State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the tourism sector was also expected to be a key driver, boosted by initiatives for Visit Malaysia 2026.

"The opening of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah Specialist Hospital, set for January 2026, will strengthen Sabah's healthcare sector and enhance Sabah's reputation as a competitive destination for medical tourism and education.

"The Kota Kinabalu International Airport will be upgraded to increase passenger capacity from 9 million to 12 million people a year.

"A similar initiative will be carried out for Tawau Airport to boost passenger capacity from 1.5 million to 2.5 million a year," he said during the tabling of the 2026 Budget at the Sabah Legislative Assembly today.

Masidi, who is also deputy chief minister, said Sabah was directly connected to 14 international destinations with 117 flights a week and 14 domestic destinations with 447 flights a week.

He said the construction sector was expected to expand consistently in the next five years, in line with the implementation of high-impact development projects in Sabah.

Major projects include the Pan Borneo Highway Phase 1B, covering 3,889km, which will enhance inter-district connectivity and logistics and transportation efficiency.

He said the expansion of the Sepanggar Bay Container Port was in progress to increase its cargo handling capacity from 0.5 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEU) to 1.25 million TEU.

"These strategic initiatives and development projects will strengthen Sabah's economic resilience, stimulate investment and enhance economic activities towards more sustainable and inclusive growth."
