Cyberjaya, 21 December 2025 - The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) affirms that reporting related to
natural disasters, tragedies and humanitarian issues should be carried out ethically, with facts and
humanity, taking into account cultural sensitivity, morality and relations between countries, especially
in the context of cross-border reporting.
MPI President Datuk Yong Soo Heong said the media carries an important responsibility not only to convey information to the public, but also to shape public understanding, preserve the dignity of the victims and maintain harmony in bilateral and regional relations.
"In situations of disasters and humanitarian crises, the MPI asserts that unnatural journalism reporting is driven by extreme emotions, sensations or narratives that can trigger misunderstandings.
"Instead, it needs to be based on trust, accuracy of facts and a comprehensive understanding of the
real reality on the ground," he said in a statement today.
Referring to the recent natural disasters on the island of Sumatra, as well as the Indonesian government's decision not to accept foreign aid, Datuk Yong said the media needed to be more careful and responsible in shaping the reporting narrative so as not to cause misinterpretation or negative perceptions.
According to him, accurate, balanced and sound reporting is essential not only to ensure that people
receive real information, but also to maintain good relations and understanding between two
neighboring countries that share the history, culture and strategic interests of the region.
"The Malaysian media that covered the disaster need to maintain high ethical standards, be
concerned about the disaster in Acheh and several regions in North Sumatra and respect all policies
and decisions set by the Indonesian government," he explained.
In this regard, the MPI advises local media practitioners to practice reporting that respects the relations between the two countries and is committed to the principle of loyalty by expressing empathy, sensitivity and a shared sense of responsibility in delivering information related to disasters and humanity.
The MPI also emphasized that through the professional training conducted, the institution always outlines the importance of understanding the field context, diplomatic implications and social media responsibilities in every reporting related to crises and tragedies.
"Ethical and integrity journalists need to prioritize human values, empathy and social responsibility in every report.
"The media must be a unifying channel, build understanding and strengthen trust, especially when society faces difficult times," he said.
