KOTA KINABALU: Zara Qairina Mahathir's mother was kept in the dark over what happened to her daughter as there were strict instructions from SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha not to reveal the details to anyone.

Examined by lawyer Shahlan Jufri, the 57th witness, Asnie Marjun, told the Coroner's court the school had received instructions not to share any information with Noraidah Lamat, who is Zara Qairina's mother.

Shahlan: During a visit, did you tell Zara's mother that the investigating officer (from the police) and the integrity unit (from the Sabah Education Department) had prevented the school from giving the report to her?

Asnie: Yes.

Shahlan: During that visit, why did no one inform Zara's mother about what happened to her daughter?

Asnie: The case was still under investigation.

Shahlan: Does Zara's mother not have the right to receive at least some information from the school at that time?

Asnie: If there had been no restrictions from the investigating officer and the integrity unit, Zara's mother could have received some information.

When asked which officers told him not to give the report to Zara's mother, the 66-year-old witness said he could not recall.

Shahlan also questioned why Zara's diaries were scanned and disseminated among the school's top management to which Asnie said it was for administrative purposes.

"Since we are administrators. It is possible that Cikgu Yuslina gave them to the principal, me, and the chief warden for administrative reasons," he said.

Teacher Yuslina Badrum was the 49th witness in the inquest who testified that she handed over the diaries to the school administrators but it was never intended to shame the victim.

Asnie also told coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan that although he received the scanned diary copies on his phone, he did not have the chance to open them as he was occupied attending to parents.

The inquest is scheduled to resume at 2pm.
