KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) will upgrade public facilities at the Petagas Memorial to cater for an expected increase in visitors in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign.
DBKK Director-General Datuk Lifred Wong said facilities such as toilets must be maintained at a satisfactory standard to ensure the comfort of visitors to the historical site.
“We take into account the needs of visitors, especially when there is a large turnout. Therefore, existing facilities need to be upgraded in line with current requirements.
“Several improvements have already been carried out through state government allocations, including repairs to pedestrian walkways that were previously frequently affected by flooding during heavy rain.
“Ensuring that public infrastructure is in good condition is important to preserve the image of the historical site as a competitive tourism destination,” he said after the Petagas War Victims Remembrance Ceremony on Wednesday.
The Petagas Memorial marks the site of the execution and burial of members of the anti-Japanese resistance force known as the Kinabalu Guerrillas, comprising 324 youths of various ethnic backgrounds in Sabah, led by Albert Kwok.
The remembrance ceremony gathered about 400 participants, involving 11 uniformed units.
The ceremony began as early as 7.30am and reached its climax with the laying of wreaths led by Sabah Deputy Chief Minister I, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam.
Also laying wreaths were Lifred, followed by the Commanding Officer of the 35th Royal Artillery Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Alhonsus Rodsung @ Benedect.
The ceremony concluded with the sounding of the “Last Post”, a 20-second moment of silence, and the “Rouse” as a tribute to the fallen heroes.
