Ewon ready to defend Upko presidency post

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Ewon Benedick has announced his readiness to offer his leadership once again by defending the party presidency for another term in the upcoming United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) 2026 election.

Upko will hold its congress on August 8 and 9, which will include elections in accordance with the party constitution.

The state deputy chief minister admitted that his leadership is not perfect and still has weaknesses, but he would continue to improve the party.

“The Sabah state election highlighted the need for our party to strengthen its machinery at all levels, especially in every State Legislative Assembly constituency.

"We cannot win elections based on desire alone without strengthening grassroots machinery.

“Therefore, all divisions intending to participate in the next general election should use this year’s Upko Triennial Delegates Conference to strengthen branches, including the leadership committees at the State Legislative Assembly level.

“If there is a need to amend the party constitution to strengthen the state legislative leadership institution, then it should receive the support of all divisions,” he said when delivering his speech at the launch of the 17th Upko Triennial Delegates Conference here yesterday.

Ewon, 42, was appointed as a president for the party in 2023.

The Kadamaian assemblyman was also elected among Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) component leaders to helm the coalition in December 2024.

Last year before 17th Sabah General Election the Penampang member of parliament resigned his federal cabinet minister. The party also severed ties with PH.

Upko becomes part of Sabah government after it won Kadamaian, Moyog and Tamparuli state seats.

“Upko’s elected representatives are the main face of the party and must be at the forefront of leadership struggle and service delivery, acting as ambassadors and reflections of the party.

"(Therefore) Upko’s elected representatives and all leaders must be free from controversy,” he said.
