KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah State Government is targeting the arrival of four million tourists to Sabah in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026).

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin, said that based on a report by the Department of Statistics Malaysia, Sabah exceeded its initial target of 3.5 million tourists last year by recording 3.6 million tourist arrivals.

“Sabah’s advantage lies in its diverse attractions, including natural beauty that encompasses vast seas, captivating forests, and mountainous areas, which are able to attract both domestic and international tourists.

“The Sukau area is the latest location in Sabah to receive global recognition, in addition to Mount Kinabalu and the Crocker Range, which have already been recognised by UNESCO,” he said after officiating the welcoming ceremony for arriving visitors at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) on Thursday.

Meanwhile, touching on safety aspects, he expressed confidence in the government’s commitment to improving Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and basic facilities in tourist hotspot areas.

“Safety is the main criterion, and we want to ensure that tourists not only come to enjoy the natural beauty, but also feel safe throughout their stay in this state,” he added.

Jafry believes that Sabah’s position as one of the world’s key tourist destinations will continue to attract visitors throughout the year, despite facing challenges, particularly in the aviation sector.
