KOTA KINABALU: Karambunai assemblyman Datuk Aliakbar Gulasan has taken to the road in a modest Perodua Axia to experience what ordinary Sabahans endure daily — navigating dangerous potholes and poorly maintained roads.
The sole Pas politician in Sabah said he deliberately chose to use the compact car to better understand the challenges faced by road users in Sabah.
"I intentionally drove an Axia so I could feel what it's like to drive one of the most commonly used vehicles by our people.
"You can truly feel the impact of potholes and the poor condition of our roads," he said in his recent video during a drive across his constituency.
Describing the exercise as an "offline" inspection, Aliakbar said he visited multiple locations, including a place to eat kelapa bakar and the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP), where road conditions remained poor for a long time.
He added that many people were fed up with the condition of these roads in Karambunai, which was supposed to be a developed urban area with good facilities.
Aliakbar, who is in his second-term as an assemblyman, said although some roads were undergoing maintenance, contractors must ensure basic quality and safety.
"These roads have been patched, but we want to know why the patching is done this way. The quality is very bad and extremely dangerous. It also causes traffic congestion.
"Yes, roads are being built, but don't turn our roads into muddy areas like this. This is unacceptable.
"I think the people want to know who is responsible. Is it the Public Works Department, a concessionaire, a state road or a federal road? The rakyat deserve to know.
"People pay taxes, road tax and insurance, but this is the quality of the roads they get. Imagine how dangerous this is for motorcyclists, especially at night when many areas in Sabah are poorly lit," he said.
He called for immediate attention and accountability to ensure safer roads for all Sabahans.
