KOTA KINABALU: The late Tun Datu Mustapha Datu Harun played pivotal role as a stateman in the formation of Malaysia.
Minister in-charge of Sabah Sarawak Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said Tun Datu Mustapha was among the key leaders who fought for Sabah’s future during the pre-independence era and led crucial negotiations that ultimately enabled the state to form the Federation of Malaysia in 1963.
“Allahyarham was one of the main figures who championed Sabah’s future before independence, including spearheading important negotiations that led to the formation of Malaysia in 1963,” he said in his Facebook post after paying tribute to the leader at his graveyard near here.
He added that the late leader’s struggle was a reminder that the nation was not built easily, but through negotiations, sacrifices and the foresight of earlier leaders who prioritised the well-being of future generations.
“The history of his struggle reminds us that this country was built through great sacrifice and careful negotiation, with the interests of future generations placed above all else,” he said.
He stressed that understanding this historical journey was crucial, particularly for younger generations who would one day shoulder the responsibility of preserving unity and harmony within the Federation.
“This awareness is important so that the original spirit behind the formation of the nation continues to be understood and appreciated, especially among the younger generation,” he said.
