KOTA KINABALU: A witness was told by seniors not to look or listen to what happened on the night of July 15 at a dormitory at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha, the Coroner’s Court heard today.

An eyewitness testified that on the night the late Zara Qairina Mahathir was called out by senior students at the dormitory, three separate incidents took place, lasting about an hour in total.

Lawyer Shahlan Jufri, who represents Zara’s mother, said the first two incidents involved allegations of theft.

“The third incident was when senior students read out a letter in which Zara expressed her wish to become a ‘badar’ (prefect).

“During this third incident in the dormitory, a senior student told the dormitory witnesses, ‘Jangan tengok, jangan dengar, jangan pasang telinga’ (Don’t look, don’t listen, don’t eavesdrop),” he said when briefing reporters on today’s proceedings.

Shahlan added that the child witness complied with the instruction out of fear of being scolded.

He also said the witness described the atmosphere that night as tense and more frightening than previous similar incidents, when questioned by Coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan.

Zara, then 13, was found unconscious on the ground floor of the school dormitory on July 16 and died the following day.

On the 54th day of the inquest, a child witness was also recalled to testify about receiving several handwritten notes from Zara, some written on yellow paper.

“In the yellow paper, the content read, ‘Bye, kesayangan.’ When asked what it meant, the student said it was Zara informing her that she was going to the musolla,” Shahlan said, adding that the note was placed inside a textbook.

The witness also said there was another note in the textbook, but it has since been lost.

The inquest will resume on Monday.
