KUALA LUMPUR: Manminder Singh Sardool Singh who has a bachelor's degree in Physics uses his knowledge of Physics and seven years of auditing experience at a multinational company to run the Merdeka Trading company.
Manminder, 47, who has two children aged 11 and 9, runs an export business in imported milk products and pure ghee.
"It is proven that multi-disciplinary knowledge helps in solving problems in business," he said.
"Physics helps me to think more logically than others, and auditing organises my way and strategy of doing business."
Manminder said he and his father didn't think he would end up running the family business.
"My father used to call me a pampered child. He thought I would never run this grocer's store. In 2001, I decided to quit my auditing job for better quality of life," he said.
Besides living a happier life, he said he was also doing well in business.
The business is based at a double-storey shop in Jalan Scott, Brickfields. The products are displayed in a four-tier wooden rack made in 1987.
A handwritten price list, blue manila cards with nutritional information, and articles about the shop are pasted on the wall.
When the shop was established 50 years ago, he said, his parents were focused on retail products such as flours, herbs, mixed spices, papadom, and oils.
Manminder who runs his business with Malay workers said he followed his father's example when it came to getting along with other races.
"My father was inspired by the ideology of the first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, to unite the nation under the name of Malaysia," he said.
