RESIDENTS of Jalan Bidara in Selayang have had to put up with thick smoke in the area since last Friday. The smoke is from a fire which broke out at a construction waste dump site behind the police headquarters in Bukit Idaman, Selayang, here.

Resident Norbasudi Bahari, who lives in Taman Bidara, said the smoke had caused the entire area to be hazy.

"There is a foul stench and it is getting worse," he said, adding that the fire started last Friday morning.

Another resident, who refused to be named, said he hoped the authorities would do something about the situation.

"I am worried that the smoke would trigger my 5-year-old daughter's asthma," he added.

Selayang Fire and Rescue department station chief Azrul Khairi Abu Bakar told Streets that the cause of the fire would only be known after the fire had been put out.

"Currently, we have managed to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading further to the adjacent forest.

"We estimate about 0.4ha of the dump site had been burnt," he said.

Azrul said  the Islamic Religious Department (Jais), Tenaga Nasional Bhd and the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) own the 5ha land.

It has been a  construction waste dump site for the past eight months.

Land operator Yaakob Lat said contractors were only allowed to dump bricks and red soil.

"Each time they dumped their construction waste, they are charged RM15 to RM20."

At press time, the fire had yet to be put out.
