KOTA KINABALU: Event promoters should also include artistes from Sabah instead of just promoting entertainers from outside to perform at programmes held in the state.
State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said that local artistes were just as talented."We understand that event promoters are bringing in artistes according to the demands of the people here.
"However, they could consider giving local performers a chance to open an event, or do a collaboration or duet with the main artiste," he said, adding that local talents deserved to get fair payment from organisers.
Masidi was speaking at a cheque-presentation ceremony by Yayasan Artis 1Malaysia to 14 local veteran artistes on Monday.
He also urged veteran artistes who were still performing to be paid accordingly.
"There should be no discrimination against these entertainers because of their age.
"Our society should appreciate the contribution made by veteran artistes in the entertainment industry."
Present were foundation president Datuk Irwan Shah and Sabah Creative Industry (Arts) Group Movement president Rozza Othman.
The foundation, launched in November last year, helps to reduce the financial burden of artistes without insurance, Employees Provident Fund savings or Socso.
Irwan, or fondly known as DJ Dave, said the foundation worked together with the group to identify and assist artistes in the state.
