KOTA KINABALU: When Margaret Lim was a nurse, she saw the need for total care of terminally ill patients and their families.

In 1998, she left her job and set up the Palliative Care Kota Kinabalu Association here to provide nursing care and emotional support for those in need.
"The association wants to reduce the worries and burdens of family members in helping their suffering relatives.
"We send trained volunteers to nurse patients and teach their family members to provide nursing care at home."
She said this after receiving financial aid from KFC Holdings at Wisma KFC here on Thursday.
She said there were 35 volunteers who ran its day care centre every Thursday, where patients and their families can receive emotional support via counselling services and sharing their experiences with others.
Those with financial problems can borrow hospital beds, oxygen sets and crutches.
"We have 86 terminally ill patients suffering from cancer, organ failure, stroke and other irreversible conditions.
"Most of them are referral patients from Queen Elizabeth Hospital's palliative care unit."
The non-governmental organisation needs RM450,000 for its operational cost annually and is dependent on donations from corporations.
KFC Holdings donated RM19,000 to the association and six charities.
