RANAU: Heat exhaustion perhaps will be the main challenge faced by about 150 runners around the world who began the 14th Sabah Adventure Race here yesterday (29/03/2013).

Race director Rudy Boyou said some participants especially from colder climate countries might not be able to cope with heat and humidity in Borneo.

"The temperature could reach close to 34 degrees Celsius in the afternoons with very little cloud cover.

"It is going to be a challenging race but it is not impossible to be completed according to past statistics of only 10-20 per cent drop out rates among competitors, "he said, adding that this year's course was not too far off from last year's race course in terms of distances and terrain.

There are two categories where both competitors were simultaneously flagged off at Mesilau resort here yesterday, to run along the same route for three days.

The first is the 75 kilometres ultra-trail marathon where solo runner is expected to be self-sufficient and able to operate independently.

Meanwhile others would see teams of two people to complete 150 kilometres that include mountain biking, trail running, abseiling, tire tubing down a river and map orienteering.

On the first day of race, runners had covered mixed-course of jungle trails, village roads and some of steepest climbs around the Kundasang Valley.

Competitors are expected to be around Ranau valley today before moving to cooler climates area in Poring tomorrow.

Those runners who are mostly white-collar individuals working as engineers, doctors and marketing managers will cover between 3,000 to 4,000 meters in accumulated ascents over the course.

The Sabah Adventure Challenge is South East Asia’s premier multi-day adventure race, founded in 1998 by an experienced team of adventure racing competitors in the heart of North Borneo.

It is also supported by Sabah Tourism Board and also Sabah Parks. All competitors who complete the entire race course will be awarded official race completion medals during the event dinner at the race.

A triathlete identified himself as Tristupe in a blog stated that he deemed the challenge as a chance to get to finish the similar race he failed in 2011.

"This time round, I will have my dearest wife to join me on this journey.

"Having to deal with missing the kids during this school holiday, me and wifey will be dedicating this race to the both of them.

"One day, when they grow up and able to understand the crazy things we do, they will look back and will want to do what Pa and Ma did," he said.
