Sabahans are top malaysian runners for KL Towerthon challenge 2013

KOTA KINABALU:Sabahans Fabian Osmond Daimon and Guianus Salagon are the top Malaysian runners for Men's Open and Junior Veteran categories respectively at KL Tower Sunrise Towerthon Challenge 2013 on Sunday.
Fabian clocked 14:53s and placed at 8th behind other Kenyan runners while Guianus placed third with the time 14:37s.
Thirty-year old Fabian from Tamparuli near here told New Straits Times yesterday that he was a little disappointed with his achievement this year although he earned "top Malaysian runner" title in that category for the second consecutive year.
"Although I treat this challenge as a training for next upcoming races, but I do care about my timing.
"Last year, in 14:26s I placed at fifth in the same category,"he said, adding that he would have to work harder knowing that his performance had slightly declined.
Fabian also attributed the overcrowded running space for the challenge this year had resulted the slight delay in his timing.
He will be racing in upcoming major international events that include climbathons in Mount Kinabalu here and Fuji in Japan, as well as full marathon in Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak and Penang in Malaysia, as well as in Mauritius Island.
During the KL Towerthon challenge, Fabian who has been self-trained for the past five years, also revealed that a sports shoes brand (Brooks Malaysia) had offered him sponsorship and professional guidance in his passion in endurance sports.
Fabian said occasionally he also trained with Guianus as they are from the same place. It is expected that the veteran runner will also join major races as his partner.
The towerthon race, which is held annually since 2001, requires racers to run for one kilometre from open space before climb up 2,058 staircases at the 421-metre tall tower in Kuala Lumpur.
There are 3,200 participants this year and about RM50,000 cash prizes were offered for first until fifth placed winners in eleven categories.
