KOTA KINABALU: The Education Ministry will set up a special task force to screen the needs of schools before executing the 2013-2025 Transformation plan for rural schools in Sabah and Sarawak.
The plan was launched by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin last April to bridge the gap between the underachieving schoolchildren attending classes in 814 rural schools in both states, and those in the urban areas.
Deputy Education Minister Datuk Mary Yap said the screening would look into every aspects.
For instance, she said the schools in the interior or on an island were two different situations that would definitely have different needs.
"Therefore, it is crucial for the ministry to work with the respective state education department to scrutinise every details before doing further planning," she added.
Yap was speaking to reporters after presenting the Budget 2013 special allocation package for 68 Chinese and 100 missionary schools in Sabah and Labuan.
"The government has always ensured that the Chinese community also enjoyed the same privileges as other races in the country.
"The budget also indicates that the ministry is committed to include missionary schools in the national mainstream education," she said.
On the RM38,960 federal allocation, she said earlier in her speech that it was meant to improve the condition of school buildings, especially those categorised as dilapidated.
"The money should be used based on the maintenance scope which are the structural improvements, re-wiring and replacement of furniture.
"This year, termite eradication, improvement of fire protection and sewage systems have been added to the scope," she said.
