Optimistic parenting helps to curb social problem among the youth.

KOTA KINABALU: Social problems among children are preventable with good family foundation.
Sabah Women Action Resources Group (SAWO) programme coordinator Irene Lim said that optimistic parenting and being attentive were the keys to provide good growing-up environment for the young generation.
"Children especially pre-schoolers are not good in expressing themselves in words and thus it had caused them to become victims of rape, abuse and others for years.
"Meanwhile, school dropouts were those who often do not get attention from parents," she said adding children shoulder their hopes on their parents in  their daily lives.
Lim is also a play therapist for the association and had been involved in dealing cases related to troubled children for more than 20 years.
"Nowadays, parents are spending less quality time with children as they are busy with smartphones and other gadgets.
"The children will be appreciative when parents put aside their gadgets for at least two hours to talk to each other,"she said during the state-level World Childrens Day celebration here yesterday.
Earlier, State Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid said that besides parents, the community and the government should work together in protecting children.
Her closing speech was read by Permanent Secretary Datuk Siti Sapoo Ahok. Also present was Welfare Services Department director Etong Terang.
