PAPAR: Petronas today assured the local community that the huge fire and loud noise at its Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) near here is a normal part of the ongoing commissioning process and it is safe.

The process is for it to get the certification to be fully operational in April next year.
SOGT facility head Mohd Sulong Abdul Ghani said that villagers and fishermen would see huge fire from their flare towers accompanying with loud noise.
"Both are normal because during the commissioning, the burning of the hydrocarbon (oil and gas) will release high pressure gas that produce loud noise.
"The commissioning process will occur anytime for hours at any day until January next year,"he said during a press briefing at the terminal here today.
SOGT, which is Petronas's largest dual-operational terminal in the country, also has its own fire control system to put out any fire besides having four standby fire-trucks.
"We will also alert the local authorities including the Fire and Rescue Department, police and hospitals during the commissioning process," he explained.

Meanwhile, SOGT project director Noor Illias Mohd Idris said they had held meetings with the villagers from seven villages around SOGT, fishemen and community leaders to explain the process.
"We held these meeting to let them know what is going on and advise them to stay away from the site during the testing period for their safety," he said.
Illias explained that after the commissioning, there would  be many exporting activities on offshore sites which would endanger small boats.

Also present were Petronas Sabah and Labuan regional chairman Mohamed Firouz Asnan  and Regional Office regional manager Julita Ontol
