The need of an e-waste dismantling center in Sabah.

KOTA KINABALU:The growing number of e-waste is prompting stakeholders to have at least one e-waste processing and dismantling centre in the state.
Sabah Computer Society executive council member and e-waste project leader William Chu postulated that there would be more e-waste materials with the growing population in the future.
"These materials has to be properly disposed as they pose hazards to human health as well as the environment.
"Unfortunately, there are not many stakeholders interested to set up the centre due to the high operational costs," he added.
The society only collects and send those items to processing facilities in peninsular Malaysia on periodic days of the year since 2011.
Last year, it received 3,740 items worth RM2,151 comprise of electrical appliance, computers, laptops, handphones among others from the public.
"It indicates that once people aware of the hazardous used gadgets, they will definitely want them to be getting rid of at proper places,"he explained.
Meanwhile, State Resource Development and Information Technology Ministry permanent secretary Bruno Vun responded that the ministry was waiting the result of an ongoing state-wide study on e-waste materials.
"Pending the outcome of study it is still early to determine the kind of e-waste processing activities needed and who shall take the leading
role in providing some kind of subsidy.
"As of now, the ministry can only render its support in public awareness campaigns (to dispose e-waste properly) by non-governmental organisations,".
