KOTA KINABALU:One in six couples in Malaysia, both from urban and rural areas, is at risk of facing infertility issue.
Fertility specialist Dr Cheong Yee Tsing said the incidence, if continue to persist, will affect the country's economy as the aging population outnumber young productive workers in future.
"The only way to reverse the situation is to advice couples to seek immediate consultation from experts after failing to conceive after a year or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse," she said.
The 13-year-experience gynaecologist added that the awareness level among the society was still below the satisfactory level.
"Although most clients are from white-collared professions, but they still have no idea on who and when to seek for treatment on their problems.
"One of them married at early 20s, but only come to me eight years later for not being able to conceive," she said, adding that although there were various treatments for infertility, but women with younger age will increase the success rate of getting pregnant.
There are several factors that affect both sexes' reproductive systems including hormonal imbalance, the organs structure, lifestyles, environment and many more.
Dr Cheong will be conducting a five-day awareness week at Sabah Care Specialist clinic here beginning next Monday.
"Public can walk-in for the one-hour session during lunch hour for infertility short video and briefing.
"I will also help them to debunk the myths and misconceptions that had led to high incidence of infertility rate during the frequently asked questions session,".
Ends.
