KOTA KINABALU:City Hall will install 24 closed-circuit televisions around the city as parts of its initiative to boost confidence among dwellers that the city is safe.
The installation will cover several shopping malls, hotels, entertainment outlets, administrative buildings and night markets.
Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir also revealed that the authority would identify more locations to place lamp posts, rail barrier to separate pedestrians and motorcyclists, lockable motorcycles parking lots among others.
The local authority will also continue working with other enforcement agencies on Ops Tanduk to curb the selling of contraband cigarettes in the city.
"We hope via this second year of the implementation of 'Inisiatif pemutihan kawasan black spot' would be able to alleviate 50 per cent of the fear among community," he said during the workshop launching yesterday.
The local authority defines "black spot" as places that make people feel unsafe due to other factors such as darkness, presence of illegal immigrants, and other factors but not on the high frequency of crime activities.
"This year, the initiative to have safer city will put more focus in Inanam and Luyang areas considering the surrounding, social, or economy social background at both places have posed unsafe perception to the community.
"There are 41 personnel from various departments to brainstorm on today's workshop to look deep into the matter and document the solutions,"he added.
City Hall is expected to receive RM2. 375 million from Home Affairs ministry, the same amount as last year, for the safe city programme.
The authority had illuminated Segama, Kampung Air and old Kota Kinabalu areas, while seven rail barriers were installed at Jalan Kemajuan, Jalan Sembulan, Jalan Mat Salleh, jalan Tanjung Aru and jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman.
