KOTA KINABALU: Thirty Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) engineering students will be given scholarship as an effort to groom more skilled workers for oil and gas industry in Sabah.
The financial assistance is provided by Talisman Malaysia Limited (TML), a subsidiary of a global upstream oil and gas company, which took over the operatorship of Kinabalu Oil Field under a joint venture with Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd in 2012.
TML senior vice president and country manager Ron Aston said that the scholarship programme supported the company's commitment to develop the people of Sabah and to encourage them to consider career options that the industry was offering with.
"By nurturing them, we are investing the future and to support the country's vision of achieving developed nation status by 2020,"he said after signing the Memorandum of Understanding on the scholarship partnership with UMS here yesterday.
The company will also fund another 30 students from its existing similar partnership programme universities namely University Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia and Universiti Sains Malaysia.
The total value of the sponsorship for the five-year academic years beginning this year is RM2.3 miilion.
"To date, 14 out of 60 students sponsored under the programme have been absorbed into our organisation.
"As suggested by the UMS, we will also looking into providing industrial training as well as the curriculum design,"he added.
On other development, UMS School of Engineering and Information Technology professor Dr Rosalam Sarbatly also revealed that the school was going to introduce bachelors degree on Oil and Gas enginnering programme for new intake in September this year.
"The discussion is in final approval from the HIgher Education ministry," he said, adding that the school had already offering Masters for similar course.
Also present was UMS Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Prof Dr. Shahril Yusof.
