KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is ready to provide medical tourism on aesthetic procedures to complement the tourism industry.
Consultant plastic surgeon Dr Charles Lee said there was a trend among travellers to have their appearances enhanced while on vacation in other countries.
“These tourists, usually aged between 30 and 60, are opting for non-invasive procedures that have minimal downtime.
“By saying that, they want these ‘walk-in walk-out’ rejuvenation procedures without having any complications, and continue enjoying their holidays.”
The specialist, who practices at KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital, said the art of providing enhanced looks had evolved from surgical to a non-invasive approach.
“It is possible to perform fat reduction, face-contouring and even treatment of varicose veins without having to put patients under general anesthesia and surgery.
“It involves state-of-the-art technology using the application of ultrasound heat and radiofrequency to do the work.”
It is common for people to seek consultation and treatment from beauticians for aesthetic procedures, such as nose augmentation, fillers, wrinkle treatment and laser treatment for skin hyper-pigmentation, instead of consulting board-certified plastic surgeons.
“People have to be aware of the risks involved in the different types of aesthetic procedures, as the end result might cause complications that cannot be reversed.”
