KOTA KINABALU: Rosnah Madiasin, 54, carried her 15-month-old grandson to safety as her house was razed in Kampung Gentisan in Sepanggar near here.
She was among 200 people who were made homeless by a blaze that broke out on the second day of Hari Raya.
“It is a house that has been passed down for four generations but it vanished within minutes.
“I am thankful that none of my 13 family members are hurt although I lost my retirement savings and everything else I owned,” Rosnah said, adding that she was
staying at a cousin’s house now.
Village Security and Development Committee chairman Awang Pasih Abdul Kahar was saddened over
the death of Anwar Husni, who tried to rescue others during the blaze.
“He was a good friend, who had always helped others.”
Anwar, in his early 20s, had attempted to rescue two children trapped inside one of the houses when he suffocated to death.
He thought his neighbours’ children were inside the house when he rushed in to rescue them. However, the children had earlier escaped the blaze. Initial investigations showed the fire could have been caused by a short circuit in one of the houses.
