Its head of department Dr Ahmad Hashim said the technology meant to handle cases of divers experiencing decompression syndrome or mountain climbers with altitude sickness.
"As of now, we are treating such cases with the equipment available only at Royal Malaysian Navy in Sepanggar base.
"The plan is set to be materialised in this hospital when there is adequate human resource and the availability of space," he said, adding that there were currently seven Emergency and Trauma specialists in the hospital and 12 at other districts in state.
Dr Ahmad was briefing reporters on the first fully-functional unit at the 10-storey twin tower new building yesterday.
Other future planning are to set up fever, chest pain and follow-up care centers at the department for thorough checksups especially to those come from rural areas.
The unit has been rebranded to meet the criteria as trauma center by having in-house X-rays, computed tomography (CT) scan, blood investigation laboratory, operation theatre, as addition to basic facility.
Its hospital director Dr Heric Corray said that the efforts of improving the service would cut cost and waiting-time for patients as most procedure could be done in the department.
Meanwhile, he commented that the building of 610 bedding was expected to fully utilised by end of the year.
"We are opening each department phase-by-phase, with the starting of Emrgency and Forensic departments as well as medical wards,".
