KOTA KINABALU: Tenom, Beaufort and Tambunan recorded highest prevalence of thalassaemia carriers in Sabah last year, according to the state Health Department.
Its director, Dr Christina Rundi, said early screenings were essential to counsel carriers on their condition.
“We aim to extend screenings to carriers’ family and relatives.
“We hope that other agencies, including non-governmental organisations and schools, will conduct awareness campaigns on thalassaemia,” she said at the recent closing of the Thalassamia Screening campaign at a local university here.
Since 2008, there are about 22,000 people with thalassaemia in Sabah, or 4.1 per cent of the population.
