Over 1,000 people turned up for the Skim Latihan 1Malaysia (SL1M) interview here yesterday hoping to qualify for the 600 trainee slots offered by 10 organisations under the scheme.
The head of the SL1M secretariat Norashikin Ismail said there was an overwhelming response here to the programme as now, school leavers and diploma holders could also apply to become trainees with the participating companies.
“Successful applicants will get the job offer that entitles them to an allowance of at least RM1, 000 per month,” she said adding the last interview session was held in Labuan last week with 800 trainee slots offered to applicants from the island, Sabah and Sarawak.
Norashikin said hopefully more private corporations and government-linked companies (GLCs) would participate in the programme as they will be entitled to a double-tax deduction incentive on allowances and training expenses incurred.
A graduate from Universiti Malaysia Sabah Shariff Abu Bakar Abdul Kadir, 28, who was among the 1,000 odd applicants said he was contacted via the alumni about the programme.
“Hopefully I could get a job which has relation to the Business and Hotel Management course that I studied for my degree,” he said.
Another applicant Liliana Peter from Sarawak, who attended the first interview in Labuan, was called for second interview here.
“My focus is to look for a job as soon as possible, as I don’t feel comfortable being unemployed right after graduation,” said the graduate from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak.
