KOTA KINABALU:Dengue cases have been decreasing since the launch of Op Mega Dengue at the start of the month, said state Health Department director Dr Christina Rundi.
The first series of the month-long operation, involving 150 department staff members, kicked off on March 1 to handle outbreaks in Sabah, particularly here and the Penampang district.
"There were more than 100 cases a week last month and the number kept rising.
"The second week of the operation saw a decrease to fewer than 100 cases per week, but the health department will continue to take preventive measures," said Dr Christina.
As of March 21, there have been 1,008 dengue cases with three deaths in Sabah.
Growing awareness in the communities has also contributed to the improved situation.
Kampung Kopungit village head Kiun Solidau said residents were keenly participating in the monthly gotong-royong.
"Recently, two villagers were diagnosed with dengue and hospitalised.
"We do not want more people, especially children, to get sick when we can prevent it,"he said at the event organised by Health Department yesterday.
