KOTA KINABALU: Fake Malaysian identity cards, produced by syndicates and appearing genuine, can fetch up to RM10,000 each in Sabah.
State National Registration Department (NRD) director Ismail Ahmad said many foreigners were duped into buying the fake MyKad as they were convinced they were real.
"Such documents are sold for between RM8,000 and RM10,000 by syndicates through middlemen.
"It is hard to trace it back to the mastermind.
"Employers should be wary of whom they hire and can check the documents of their workers with the department," he told a press conference here yesterday.
Ismail said there were cases the holders of fake MyKad tried to apply for passports or open bank accounts using the falsified documents, and that was when the department detected them.
He said so far, six Indonesions and Filipinos have been detained and charged for possession of fake Mykads this year.
"Last year, eight foreigners from Keningau district were caught in similar operations to detect fake Mykad," he said.
Ismail said such cases were believed to have occurred in all districts in Sabah.
The issue was highlighted in a local newspaper recently, when a source alleged that Keningau district had the highest number of fake Mykad issues to immigrants.
Deputy Chief minister Tan Sri Pairin Kitingan, who is also Keningau MP, was reported saying he would seek clarification from the Sabah NRD over the matter.
