KOTA KINABALU: A wounded dolphin rescued on the rocky shores in Likas near here is recovering at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).
The mammal, a Risso's dolphin, also known as a grey dolphin, will be monitored by experts from the state Wildlife Department, and staff and students at the university's marine centre.
UMS Borneo Marine Research Institute lecturer Dr John Madin said the 3m long dolphin would be transferred to a bigger tank so that it could be better treated.
"The dolphin is in stable condition. The plan is to rehabilitate it."
The wounded mammal was discovered two days ago by villagers, who informed the authorities about it.
It was taken to the university's institute for observation while a team from the department, led by Dr Sandy Ling, began treatment.
More than 30 UMS students took turns to keep the dolphin upright and afloat in a tank until it was able to swim on its own.
