"It was an unexpected win as there were other award-winning and competitive designers also participating in the contest," said Jeffrey, adding he also submitted another entry with influence of traditional elements.

"The other evening dress, although did not win any prize, showcases the beauty of classical Bajau Samah elements from Kota Belud.

“Elements such as bright colours, golden Bunga Rebung motive, as well as Mendapun neckpiece and unique Sarimpak headgear are highlighted to give the traditional look,” he

Jeffrey, better known as Jeffie Jeff, learns designing, sketching and sewing on his own.

“I may not be formally trained (in fashion designing), but I believe we can always learn and be resourceful especially in this modern age of the internet.

"If I had the opportunity and the financial means, I would consider having proper training to enhance my skills,” he said, adding he charges customers RM300 and above depending on design and materials used.

His passion in designing ethno-based collection dresses began years ago and catered mainly for beauty pageants during the annual harvest festival dubbed the Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan.

He said nowadays his design has also gained popularity among brides, wishing to have a contemporary wedding dress with traditional elements.
