PENAMPANG: The family of Singaporean quake survivor has adopted mountain guide Mohd Ridzuan Kauhimin as their "son".
He became famous when the picture of him piggybacking a 12-year-old El Wafeeq Ridzuan Kauhinin went viral.
Ridzuan, 25, from Ranau and two other guides, Simon Gohinmin and Mazlee Liong were invited by the families of Wafeeq and another pupil Arnaav Karan Chabria to visit the island republic.
The trio had taken turns to care for two Tanjong Katong Primary School pupils who were among hundreds stranded on the Mount Kinabalu after the 5.9 Richter scale earthquake that struck on June 5.
Ridzuan, was met during “Remembering Our Heroes” charity concert on Friday, said they had received a warm welcome from the families of Wazeeq and Arnaav.
“They treated us well when we were in Singapore and Wazeeq’s family adopted me as their son."
He said the children were in good condition.
The three guides were in Singapore for five days, from Monday onwards.
They met officials from the Singapore Education Ministry and quake survivors.
They took part in the shooting of a documentary entitled “Heart of Courage” by Channel NewsAsia.
Ridzuan said the trip was one of his fondest memories.
However, he said, he was disappointed that he had missed an interview with the Sabah Fire and Rescue department on Friday morning.
The department has opened 100 auxilliary firefighters positions specially for registered mountain guides who lost their jobs after the earthquake.
“It looks like I have to look for another job while pending for the repairs at Mount Kinabalu to complete.”
