KOTA KINABALU: Local government will be looking into appropriate building codes to be applied to high rise property to be built in Sabah.

City Hall mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir said he would be chairing a steering committee to address safety of buildings specifically during earthquake.

“The steering committee was set up following the June 5 earthquake measuring 5.9 on Richter scale.

“We are waiting for reports and recommendations on which country’s (building) codes to be implemented for buildings in the city,” he said after officiating a restaurant at Lintas Square near here yesterday.

Sixty one buildings including schools, hospital and mosque 22 roads and 22 slopes in state wide were damaged following the earthquake and more than 100 aftershocks.

Building code, or building control, is a set of rules indicating minimum standards for constructed buildings and non-building structures.

It aims to protect public health, safety and general welfare as they relate to the construction and occupancy of buildings and structures.

Abidin added while waiting for the report on building codes to be completed, property developers could refer to the authority’s High Risk committee for the approval of erecting high rise buildings.

Earlier during the officiating ceremony, mayor complimented the restaurant owners’ move to bring in unique but tasty delicacy into the city to cater for city folks and tourists.

Andy Goh, one of the owners from here, said there were demands of frog meats among local and international tourists.

“By opening this restaurant, we are also creating job opportunities for farmers here to supply frogs and hiring locals to work here.”
