Students raise funds for hall.

PENAMPANG: Students of SM St Michael here have raised fund selling recycled items to rebuild a community hall at Kampung Kibambangan.

They collected recycled items among the school community, villagers, district public library among others.

SM St Michael is one of 15 schools chosen to be part of the “All About Youth” programme funded by Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) which  encourages youth to contribute to the betterment of the nation.

Its principal Marie Yong said the initiative to turn waste into money would encourage the public to better care for the environment.

“Sabah is popular for its nature and can become a better place for eco-tourism.

“This project,‘Turning Waste into Millions’ aims to create a generation that cares about the environment,” she said during the launch of the refurbished community hall here yesterday.

The school spent about RM1,200, which is part of the proceeds, to repaint and rebuild the community hall.   

Every week, students travel to Kampung Kibambangan to clean up Sungai Putaton and to teach villagers about the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle concept as well as to help make handicrafts. 

The area, which has implemented a community-based fisheries resource management system known as “tagal”, is also a popular picnic spot in the district.

Petronas has given a start-up fund of RM2,000 to each participating school to work on social responsibility projects in respective areas. The winning school will represent the state in the finals in Kuala Lumpur.

The grand prize is a school refurbishment fund worth RM50,000 and each participating student will get RM1,000.

Present were district officer Luvita Koisun, Petronas Sabah and Labuan regional office general manager Julita Ontol and UPKO Penampang chief Datuk Donald Mojuntin.
