TAMBUNAN: Residents here have been told to prepare for Visit Tambunan Year in 2017, said Sabah deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Pairin Kitingan.

Pairin, who is also state Infrastructure Development minister and Tambunan assemblyman, said the district had great potential to be developed as tourism destination as it had several places of attraction.

“Among them are Trus Madi Mountain, Mahua Waterfall, Rafflesia Centre and Kipandi Butterfly Farm which are gaining popularity among visitors.Tourists will enjoy the beautiful and green scenery, as well as to get the opportunity to know more about our cultures and traditions,” he said after inspecting roadworks at Kampung Kerokot here on Friday.

He called on people to be creative in selling their products or services to boost their economic status.

“Villagers can offer packages where visitors get to stay overnight to enjoy nature, experience the local life and taste local cuisine. But before that, we have to provide better facilities including accommodation and maintain cleanliness in the district,” he said, adding he hoped such measure could increase tourist arrivals to the state.

In ushering the Visit Tambunan Year, Pairin assured that training would be given to residents to hone their  marketing and hospitality skills, among others.

He also announced the three-day Ginger and Bamboo festival beginning on Oct 29.

Tambunan, which is a two-hour drive from state capital, is the largest producer of ginger in the state. Many areas here are also covered by a lot of bamboo.

“Bamboo will be the highlight, as it can be turned into food, furniture and musical instruments,” he said, adding people from China, Japan and several countries were deeply interested in bamboo.
