TOURISM BOOM: Malaysia's second highest mountain gaining in popularity.

TAMBUNAN:Trus Madi mountain here is becoming more popular with climbers and nature lovers.

Dr Muhammad Naim Ab Razak, 28, who works in Lahad Datu, said he was looking forward to climbing Malaysia’s second highest mountain this November.

“Hopefully, I can cure the frustration of having to cancel my Mount Kinabalu hiking trip twice.

“The first time was because of miscommunication with a travel agent, and the other was because of the aftershocks,” said Dr Naim, who is from Kelantan.

Mount Kinabalu in Ranau was closed following an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale on June 5.

Since the reopening, though only up to Laban Rata on Sept 1, the meteorological department had recorded four aftershocks.

Nova Renata, who had climbed Mount Kinabalu, described the climb at Trus Madi as more challenging.

“The flora and fauna on the hike up (the mountain)were also interesting, with many unique pitcher plants, orchids, moss as well as large trees covered with fungi,” said Nova.

Tour director Linus Gonsilou said it had received advance bookings for hike up Trus Madi up to November.

“A newly built rest house at KM2 only has 20 beds for climbers to rest.

“We could squeeze in another five people with permission from the Forestry department,” he said, adding the mountain had gained popularity especially among international visitors.
