PENAMPANG: Students of a rural school here have been exposed to basic agricultural skill which they would be consuming the produce later.

SK Buayan Parents and Teachers association chairman Irene Tani said the pioneer project dubbed as “Basic Agriculture programme” had started in July.

Although most of the students come from farming background, the programme aims to teach them proper skills and knowledge in agriculture.

“The school management engaged 25 students in the programme of whom stay at teachers’ quarters during schooldays.

“There will be a two sessions a week for the students to take care of those plants and livestock,” she said, adding teachers would be supervising them during the one-hour farming activity.

The farm, which involves a 0.1 ha land within the school compound, also rear 50 chickens and breed 500 tilapia fish.

Schoolchildren’s parents had helped to set up of the farm and barn as gestures of supporting the programme.
Besides the community, several people had also contributed money for the project.

“Students’ parents are very keen on such programme as they believe it will benefit the children in term of survival skill and keep them occupied.

“We are expecting to yield the outcomes early next year, students will get to enjoy their hardwork” she added.

Irene also elaborated that the agricultural activity was part of the schoolchildren adoption programme.

Most of the students live very far from the school and thus causing obstacles for them to come to school especially during rainy season.

Teachers will stay with students at the staff quarters within school compound. Besides providing conducive environment for  the children to study, teachers are also able to provide guidance during revision hours.

SK Buayan of less than 50 students is located about 25 kilometre from town.  The place is only accessible using four-wheel drive vehicles or by foot.

Despites its remote location, the school had achieved 100 per cent passing rate for the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah examination last year and ranked third place in Penampang district.
