KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government via its Economic Council will guarantee that all contractors for its portion of thePan-Borneo highway project will be from the state.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister cum Infrastructure Development Minister Tan Sri Pairin Kitingan said the implementation of the highway would be on Public Private Partnership basis.
He said the highway project, which will be on an open tender basis, would be divided into clusters to provide more opportunities for capable local contractors to implement the project.
"A Private Delivery Partner (PDP) or consortium will be appointed by the government for planning, design, contracts procurement and project monitoring.
"PDP is a delivery vehicle which would help the government expedite the Pan-Borneo project within stipulated time and budget," he said during the 14th state assembly sitting here.
He was responding to questions by Klias assemblyman Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin on when the project would commence and whether all the contractors would be from Sabah.
Pairin said the highway project in Sabah would begin in March next year after the designs are completed next month.
The project will be divided in three initial packages namely Jalan Donggongon- Papar spur (11.7km); Tawau-Semporna (between KM45 - KM49.7); and the Lahad Datu bypass (7.1km).
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman also added the PDP officers to oversee the overall project implementation would also be from Sabah.
During the tabling of 2016 Budget, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had announced that the toll-free highway would be completed by 2021.
In Sabah, construction of the 706km stretch starting from Sindumim to Tawau is estimated to cost RM16.1 billion.
The Sarawak stretch of the highway will span 1,090km
