KOTA KINABALU: City Hall will be announcing 14 public parks in the city as recycling parks in near future, said mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir.

“Many developed nations have been implementing the recycling practices and reaped benefits from it.

“It is not impossible for the city to execute the similar programme but it needs proper planning and awareness among the people,” he said during the handover of recycle bins from Astro to the local authority here yesterday.

Those 400 bins dubbed as “Ekobins” will be placed at 14 public parks in the city.

Abidin described the providence of those bins would create awareness among locals to put recycling into practice when they are at the parks.

“It could ensure cleanliness and comfort among other users and indirectly will help to promote eco-tourism among locals and others.

“We also would like to encourage other private companies to organise similar programme as part of their corporate social responsibilities to the community.”

Earlier, there were more than 1,000 students from 13 higher learning institutes here took part in the beach cleaning activities.

In about two hours, participants collected 5.4 tonne rubbish along the four-kilometre beach.

Present were Sabah Tourism Board chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai and Astro community affairs director Datuk David Yap.
