KOTA KINABALU: Two new enactments were passed in a bid to better protect Sabah from zoonotic diseases and impose stronger laws against animal cruelty.

The Animal enactment 2015 and the Animal Welfare Enactment 2015 were tabled by the Agriculture and Food Industries minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin during the state assembly sitting here yesterday.

Under the Animal Enactment Act 2015, laws will be put in place to prevent the spread of diseases, as well as promote conservation of animal and birds, as well as the promotion of veterinary public health.

“Among justifications to abolish Animals Ordinance 1952 and to have Animal Enactments are to fulfil the increasingly urgent need to improve and strengthen legal provisions to meet current needs.

“The enactment will enable the state to retain its disease-free status while encouraging the industry to become more competitive and free from environmental pollution,” he added.

Zoonotic diseases are infectious diseases that can be spread from animal hosts to humans.

As for the Animal Welfare Enactment 2015, it provides for the management of welfare and ownership of animals, licensing and prevention of cruelty.

He added that the enactment was important to prevent animal cruelty and increase awareness of responsible ownership.

The August house had also passed amendments to the Forests (Constitution of Forest and Reserves and Amendment) Enactment 1984 tabled by Assistant minister to the Chief Minister.
