Endurance challenge with a twist

TUARAN: Fish feeding at "tagal" river at Kampung Poturidong in Kiulu here was part of the racing activities in the inaugural Kiulu Adventure Challenge here yesterday.

Tagal is the method used by local community to prevent fishing for certain period to rehabilitate the river.
The river has almost a tonne worth of fish which each weighs between one and two kilogrammes.

Cyclist Chung Ching Yian, 32, from Kota Kinabalu said it was her first time having us to feed fish as part of the competition.

"It is a good initiative to let visitors or locals to know better of the ecotourism here including fish feeding.

"On the cycling terrain, it is difficult but durable and give satisfying challenge to me," said Chung who had been in cycling activities for two years.

She was one of more than 500 adventure activities lovers including eight international participants who took part in the Kiulu Adventure Challenge here yesterday.

The inaugural event aimed to promote rural tourism in Kiulu under Tuaran constituency.

Among activities held were 13-Kilometre running, 37-kilometre cycling and 14-kilometre rafting.

Participants could either choose solo dualthon or triathlon categories.

As early as 630am, Kiulu assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai flagged off runners from Chanteek Borneo gallery which houses hundred of dolls donning traditional costumes.

They ran across four suspension bridges with a background of the majestic Mount Kinabalu before running along the stream to finishing line at Kampung Rangalau.

Cycling participants started their journey from Kampung Rangalau, made a 10-minute stop at Kampung Poturidong to feed fish at first check point, KampungTulung, Kampung Pukak and made a return to Kampung Rangalau for the finishing.

Rafting began at Kampung Pukak where participants were thrilled with Kiulu white water at Grade II.

The event was jointly organised by the Kiulu Tourism Association (KTA), Sri Pelancongan Sabah and local 

Joniston said local and foreign visitors were welcomed to witness the event and take the opportunity to experience the outdoor activities.

"Kiulu offers such as Tagal fish feeding, fishing, exciting activities such as rafting, Zipline, cycling, trailing and camping or merely enjoy a picnic with family and friends next to the scenic river of Kiulu,"he added.
