KOTA KINABALU: A revered educator Datuk Brother Charles O’Leary has passed away today after attending the morning mass in Stella Maris Parish in Tanjung Aru here.
The 87-year-old SM La Salle past principal believed to have collapsed due to stroke around 7.30am, while trying to get into his car.
O'Leary arrived with the pioneer group of La Salle Brothers who came to Borneo in the 1950s and was the last surviving member.
He helped set up the school here in 1958 when the mission took over from the Mill Hill Fathers, where he became the principal in 1969 to 1986.
Many of his former students became leaders in politics and the government administration, such as former Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Sabah Tun Ahmad Shah Abdullah, deputy chief minister cum PBS president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, former Upko president and former federal minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok and Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, Tan Sri Richard Malanjum.
One of the church staff Bernadus Boli said Brother Charles fell down in front of the gate.
"A newspaper delivery man informed us after the brother fell when he was about to get into his car. His body was ice-cold and pulseless when we found him before he was sent by ambulance to Queen Elizabeth hospital," he added.
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Brother Peter Foo said the O’Leary had a bypass heart surgery after he retired as school principal.
“It is also learned Brother Charles was planning to go back to a hostel at the La Salle school after the morning church service,” he added.
There was no post mortem held for O’ Leary and the body will be kept at Foo Look Siew funeral parlor until Saturday.
On Sunday, his remain will be brought to La Salle school and a mass to be held at 9am.
Requiem mass to be held at 10am the following day and the body will buried at Mile 4 ½ in Penampang.
