KOTA KINABALU: Visitor arrivals from China is back on an upward trend but tourism players were reminded not to rest on their laurels.

Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) vice president (inbound) Datuk KL Tan yesterday said there have been signs of improvement based on the arrival statistics the second half of last year.

Tan said with this, tourism players and other stakeholders in the industry need to give it the right push to bring back the numbers.

“Matta would like to advise all service providers, product owners, transportation and retailers to offer quality service at fair price and added value packages.

"It would encourage tourists make good comments to others when they go back home and or even return,” he added.

Tan added he was confident more Chinese visitors would come as there are six airlines offering 61 direct flights here including from Wuhan by AirAsia.

The new destination was launched by Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun on Friday.

The others are Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai while the other airlines are Malaysia Airlines,China Southern Airlines, Dragonair, Shanghai Airlines and Spring Airlines .

“Sabah offers amazing diversity of landscapes range from highest Mount Kinabalu, magnificent forests, long sandy white beaches, world-class scuba-dive sites and marine parks.

“Meanwhile the people of Sabah are with different ethnicities, cultures and traditions,” he said, adding Mandarin is also widely spoken by the people which make it easier for tourists to communicate with the locals.

Meanwhile some 10,000 Chinese tourists are expected to arrive here during Chinese Lunar Year next month.

Sabah Association of Tour and Travel Agents (SATTA) chairman Datuk Seri Winston Liaw had said those visitors were from Hong Kong, Changsa, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Chongqing.

They are expected to be flown in with 19 chartered flights and several scheduled flights.
