The inaugural Kiulu Adventure Challenge held recently, drew 500 racers, including seven international participants, who came to run, cycle, raft in a scenic Kampung setting about 65km from Kota Kinabalu.
The half-day challenge included a 13km run, a 37km ride and a 14km whitewater rafting in the Grade II Sungai Kiulu.
Not only did the racers get to run along the river but they also had the chance to meet the local people and enjoy the breathtaking view of rice fields.
They also raced through four suspension bridges, including the famous Jambatan Tamparuli.
Kiulu is said to have the most number of suspension bridges in the country and is on its way to being listed in the Malaysia Book Of Records.
Participants were also required to feed pelian fish at Kampung Poturidong. There is an abundance of fish in Sungai Tuaran as a result of tagal (a traditional practice of scheduled harvest seasons) to rehabilitate the river.
The rafting race began at Kampung Pukak where the Grade II Kiulu white water rapids required only occasional manoeuvrings to avoid rocks.
The race ended at Riverbug camping base at Kampung Rangalau. The place also offers various activities such as ziplining, abseiling, jungle trekking and survival training.
A week after the 3-in-1 challenge, a group of 11 competitors and their families came for a two-day Kiulu 4x4 Amateur Challenge.
They camped overnight at Kondis point, which is located by the river, with upgraded public amenities. The camping base can accommodate about 200 campers.
Meanwhile, an operator running Kiulu farmstay near Kampung Mantob offers ecotourism activities such asbuffalorides, fish spa, river tubing and quad biking.
Kiulu Tourism Association, which comprises operators and villagers from 15 villages, was set up last year.
Besides earning extra income from those activities, villagers are also learning sustainable management of resources and environment.
